Why Math Tutoring?
Middle School is a crucial stage in a student's career. In
these years, foundational concepts in most subjects
are introduced. Later education in high school and college
is aimed to expand these fundamentals at an even broader and
deeper level. Multiple demands on students during high school
education like AP & Honors course enrolment, Competitive Sports,
Band, Clubs, Volunteer work etc leave practically little or
no time to devote on learning 'fundamentals', esp.
in Math. It is important for students to grasp the foundational
concepts early on, so that they have mastered learning
patterns and subject specific strategies. That way they are
setup for success during High School.
Both as parent and a tutor, I believe all is not right with
the public school system. The complexity of problems facing
the system are numerous and too involved to be discussed here.
The teacher to student ratio has increased manifold over the
last several years resulting in lesser emphasis on student's
individual needs. Students not only feel the pressure while
taking more challenging Honors and AP courses, in addition
there is no support to clarify gaps in learning.
Home Tutoring provides a support structure that helps
the students at this crucial stage. An experienced tutor helps
orient learning patterns by focusing on 'fundamentals'.
As the methods are reinforced again and again over a period
of time, the student picks up subject specific strategies
and becomes an independent learner.
I work with students by carefully assessing their strengths
and opportunity areas in Math in first few weeks. Even though
I tutor in part time, this is the most rewarding part of my
day. Teaching my students and see them excel in Math and consistently
getting higher grades is indeed a very satisfying experience
for me. Thus my program helps students to,
- Enjoy Learning
- Resolve day to day difficulties one-on-one.
- Raise Grades
- Improve Self Esteem
- Become independent learners
Goals of tutoring:
- Assist students in becoming independent learners
- Identify student's area(s) of concern
- Expose students to effective study skill techniques (e.g.,
note taking, time management)
- Assist students in reaching a higher level of competence
in Math.
- Assist students in becoming active in the learning process.
- Aid in the development of a positive approach toward
learning.
- Provide a supportive and encouraging environment where
learning takes place at the student's pace.
Scope:
- The tutoring offering is in the subject of Math. I keep
focus on one subject only.
- Only 6th to 10th grades are tutored under this program.
I occasionally tutor 11th & 12th grades too.
- The program instruction is school curriculum oriented.
The school text book is the main source of study.
- We occasionally reference other books for rigorous practice.
Mode:
- Group instruction with a single tutor on a one-to-group
basis.
- Multiple sessions during the week and weekends. Total
hours of instruction will be constant over a period of time.
Please call or email for more details.
- The tutor reserves the right to change the tutoring schedule
by giving an advance notice. However, the total number of
hours of instruction will always stay the same.
- The groups are limited to students from the same grade.
There will be no mixing of students from different grades.
Fees:
- For cost protection on overheads, we ask for a one
month minimum commitment to the tutoring program.
- As a free introduction, I offer one free tutoring session
to the student. This can help the student make up their
mind if the tutoring style meets their needs.
- We charge a low flat fee for one month of instruction.
Please call or email us for more details. Our rates are
competitive.
- If you'd like to keep enrolled over and above the minimum
commitment, our contract is incremental by one month. Your
obligation to the contract is on a month to month basis.
- As a professional courtesy we request of the parents/
guardians to give us minimum two-week notice before stoppage
of tutoring services. This helps us plan better for accommodating
incoming students into the groups.
